Overview of “Origins”
The following essay on “Origins” deals with the Genesis account of Creation. This account is actually written in the future tense, indicating that, in reality, Genesis is a prophetic document. That is, it points forward to a continuing, ongoing Creation rather than to some fiat Creation completed long ago with a few words of command. Tragically, those who piously thump their Bibles, pounding home the ideology that requires such a fiat Creation, have missed the message of the Bible itself. Thus, the time has come to open our eyes to the real purpose of the biblical Genesis as the prophecy of a continuing Creation (creatio continua). Moreover, since Genesis is a prophetic document, it points to the ultimate covenantal transformation of all Creation rather than to its apocalyptic termination.
